Faculty Fellow Sandweiss to lead grad-student workshop today

Martha Sandweiss, Ph.D., professor of history and American studies at Amherst College and a 2006 Faculty Fellow, will lead a graduate-student workshop on "American Material Culture: Reading Photographs From Local Collections" at 10 a.m. today in the Arts & Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building, Room 201.

Sandweiss is the author of Laura Gilpin: An Enduring Grace (1986), co-author of Eyewitness to War: Prints and Daguerreotypes of the Mexican War, 1846-1848 (1989), editor of Photography in Nineteenth-Century America (1991), co-editor of The Oxford History of the American West (1994) and a contributing writer to numerous volumes on the art and photography of the American West.

Her most recent book is Print the Legend: Photography and the American West (2002).

She earned a doctorate in history from Yale University in 1985.

Sandweiss is the fourth of six speakers appearing this spring as part of the Faculty Fellows Lecture and Workshop Series, presented by The Center for the Humanities in Arts & Sciences.
