Taking flight

Larry Brase Jr. (left), Region 5 director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and Edward S. Macias, Ph.D., executive vice chancellor, dean of Arts & Sciences and the Barbara and David Thomas Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences, celebrate the placement of a commemorative plaque on the south-facing wall of McMillan Hall in a ceremony Nov. 12. The field west of Olin Library extending to the Athletic Complex was the "aeronautic concourse" of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and has been deemed a "significant aerospace site" by the AIAA's Historic Aerospace Sites Program. Representatives from the two institutions and the Missouri Historical Society celebrated the occasion with a reception at the Rettener Gallery in the Arts & Sciences Laboratory Science Building.
