Olympic star Jesse Owens gave a speech called "This Land of Opportunity" at the University during National Brotherhood Week.
Feb. 22, 1853
The charter for a new educational institution, Eliot Seminary, was passed by the Missouri legislature. State Sen. Wayman Crow wrote the charter.
Feb. 22, 1946
On the University's 93rd birthday, Arthur Holly Compton was formally inaugurated as the ninth chancellor. He served until 1953.
Feb. 25, 1947
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed a standing-room-only crowd in the Field House.
