This Week In WUSTL History

Oct. 4, 1859
Joseph Gibson Hoyt was inaugurated as the first chancellor, serving until 1862.

Oct. 6, 1995
Mark S. Wrighton was inaugurated as the 14th chancellor in a ceremony in Brookings Quadrangle.

Oct. 9, 1918
The University was closed by the Board of Health in order to contain a flu epidemic. It reopened Nov. 18.

This feature will be included in each 2003-04 issue of the Record in observance of Washington University's 150th anniversary.
