The first Ervin Scholars began their education at Washington University. These scholarships are awarded to African-American students on the basis of academic merit and community service. The scholarships were named in honor of John B. Ervin, a nationally recognized African-American educator and former WUSTL dean.

This feature will run in each 2003-04 issue of the Record as part of the observance of Washington University's 150th anniversary.
