VP Debate stage

VP debate: a 'homecoming'

The vice presidential debate at Washington University was "a homecoming of the most special kind" for the Commission on Presidential Debates, said Executive Director Janet Brown. More than 73 million viewers tuned in to watch Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin debate Oct. 2 at the Field House in the Athletic Complex.

Team effort a big reason University shines as debate venue

It takes a tremendous, behind-the-scenes effort of staff and faculty to pull off a successful debate.

Thousands of media credentialed for debate

The excitement surrounding this year's election brought more than twice as many journalists to campus to cover the vice presidential debate as arrived in 2004 for the presidential debate. About 3,100 journalists received credentials to cover the historic debate.

Student stand-ins

Student stand-ins debate WUSTL-style

WUSTL students participated in a practice debate Oct. 1 so CNN — the network providing the pool feed for all television media covering the debate — could check lights, sound and camera angles.

Debate Faculty Panel

Debate characterized by populist tone, faculty panel says

The only vice presidential debate of 2008 met faculty experts' expectations, but not their hopes that it would be more than a bumper sticker event.

Student media get valuable hands-on experience

Covering the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate was a dream come true for WUSTL student media groups.

Gov Bill Richardson

Post-debate frenzy: spinning a tale of two candidates

Against a backdrop of political theater, the dramatic question-and-answer session between Sen. Joseph Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin was just the first act. Act II, with its assorted cast of characters, was staged around the corner from the debate hall in the Media Filing Center.

Record number of students witnessed debate in person

For most WUSTL students, the opportunity to witness a presidential or vice presidential debate live comes along once in a college career, if they are lucky. For a University-record 432 students, that dream became reality Oct. 2.

Athletic Complex transformed into debate site

Transforming the Athletic Complex into a television studio and media center took dedication, teamwork and a tradition of doing it right.

Taking the debate to the community at the 560 Music Center

Eager debate watchers started lining up outside the 560 Music Center in University City before the doors opened at debate night for WUSTL's first-ever off-campus, public viewing event.
