A toy story

Finding the perfect holiday gift for everyone on your list can be a difficult task. It can be especially tough for parents of young children. Toys are the obvious choice, but with so many out there, how do parents choose the right ones for their children, and is it possible for toys to have some educational benefit as well? R. Keith Sawyer, Ph.D., associate professor of education in Arts & Sciences, offers advice to parents worried about making the right toy choice for their children. Video available.


Architecture students design and build new plaza in Grand Center; dedication Dec. 15

This fall, a group of 10 architecture majors from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts teamed up with Grand Center, Inc. and the Pulitzer Foundation to design and build a new public plaza for visual art. The plaza — located immediately south of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra's Powell Hall — will host outdoor exhibitions, site-specific installations, performance pieces, and video and new-media work by local and nationally known artists, as well as information about Grand Center programs and events.

Himadri Pakrasi named the Freiberg Professor

Himadri B. Pakrasi, Ph.D., has been named the George William and Irene Koechig Freiberg Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences. An installation will occur during the 2007-08 academic year, according to Edward S. Macias, Ph.D., executive vice chancellor, dean of Arts & Sciences and the Barbara and David Thomas Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences, who made the announcement.

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design ranked 6th in nation

The University's Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has risen four spots to tie for 6th in the nation according to a recent satisfaction survey by DesignIntelligence, a monthly journal published by the Design Futures Council.

Nutritionist offers tips to make it through the New Year without putting on pounds

Your leftover Halloween candy is almost gone from your cupboards, and the holiday season with all its sweet temptations has begun. However, all those holiday parties and office gatherings laden with scrumptious food and drink don't have to mean the end of your weight loss plan. It's still possible to enjoy the bounty and not feel deprived of your favorite holiday dishes, says Connie Diekman, director of University Nutrition. Video available.
