Robot senses and avoids fire

Agent 007 is a mighty versatile fellow, but he would have to take a backseat to agents being trained at WUSTL. Computer scientist engineers here are using wireless sensor networks that employ software agents that so far have been able to navigate a robot safely through a simulated fire and spot a simulated fire by seeking out heat. Science outreach programs help students and mentors
 Medical and graduate students who volunteer for science outreach programs, like the University's Young Scientist Program, don't just help underrepresented public school students consider careers in science, according to a survey published last week in Science. They also help themselves.
AAAS elects four WUSTL faculty as fellows
 Four faculty members have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society. The highest honor awarded by AAAS, the rank of fellow is bestowed upon members by their peers in recognition of scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.
Winds of ChangeCasting
 Video communication is good for business, according to research by Jackson Nickerson, associate professor of organization & strategy in the Olin School of Business. Nickerson and advertising executive Brad Fels are writing a book for managers on "ChangeCasting," a process they describe as "a set of tips, tricks and techniques for communicating with and listening to your community to lead and accelerate organizational change."
Gordon W. Philpott elected to Washington University Board of Trustees
 At its meeting today, the Board of Trustees of Washington University in St. Louis elected Gordon W. Philpott, M.D., an emeritus professor of surgery at the School of Medicine, as a member, according to Mark S. Wrighton, chancellor. A recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award, Philpott graduated in 1961 from the Washington University School of Medicine, after earning his bachelor's in 1957 from Yale. He joined the University surgery faculty in 1968, focusing his efforts on treating breast cancer, as well as colorectal cancer.

 Travelers' safety inspection

On Dec. 9, WUSTL Police and Parking Services, in partnership with Hartmann's Towing, will once again sponsor a free travelers' vehicle inspection service to students, faculty and staff.

 Vehicle storage

Students without yellow or residential parking permits wishing to store their vehicles on the Danforth Campus during winter break must come to the Parking Services office, located at 700 Rosedale, to receive authorization.
