20-point win puts women in Sweet 16

The Bears earned a spot in the Sweet 16 with an 87-67 victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire on March 3 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. WU jumped on Eau Claire early, pulling ahead 25-3 and allowing the Blugolds to shoot just 8 percent in the first nine minutes. WU extended its lead to as much as 26 four minutes into the second half.

Four Bears scored in double figures, led by Tasha Rodgers' game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore Jennifer Rudis finished with a career-high 20 points and 10 boards. Lindsey Merrill scored 12 points and Robin Lahargoue had 10.

Men's hoops out of NCAA Tournament

Ryan Knuppel hit a long three-pointer with four ticks left to lift Elmhurst College to a 78-77 win over the Bears men's basketball team in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 3 in Elmhurst, Ill.

The Bears led 77-72 with just under two minutes left, but Knuppel, who hit eight three-pointers on the night, connected three times in the last 1:38 to lift the Bluejays to the come-from-behind win.

Chris Alexander led the Bears with 21 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Dustin Tylka finished with 16 points, Chris Jeffries had 13 and Jarriot Rook had 10. Ryan Patton scored nine points and dished seven assists.

The Bears finish the season with a 23-4 record, tying the school record for wins in a season.

Baseball opens 4-1

The baseball team won its first four games and opened its season with a 4-1 weekend at Kelly Field. Four complete-game performances propelled the Bears to the four wins. Jon Curd went the distance in a 6-2 victory over Webster University. On Saturday, the Bears downed Coe College and Aurora University, both by 3-2 scores, with Kurt O'Neal and Noah Valentino picking up the wins. Damien Janet shut out Aurora, 7-0, Sunday; but the Bears fell 11-4 to Coe in Sunday's finale.

Dusty Deschamp finished the weekend 10 for 18 with two doubles, four RBIs and four walks to earn University Athletic Association Player of the Week honors.

Track women win UAA championship

The women's indoor track, led by UAA records from Sarah Springer and Elizabeth Stoll, won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championship on March 2-3. The men's team finished second, trailing Emory University by just 21 points.

The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are today and Saturday, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Stoll, Suzi Ramsey and Todd Bjerkaas all earned bids to the meet.
