Bears beat Rhodes

Washington U. improved to 3-2 on the year as the football Bears turned a close game at halftime into a 48-7 win at Rhodes College Saturday, Sept. 30. Quarterback Brian Tatom hit C.O. West with a 51-yard touchdown strike on the first play from scrimmage to put the team up early, 7-0. Freshman Jonathan Feig added two field goals to push the lead to 13-0, but Rhodes answered by converting a WU turnover into an 85-yard scoring drive to cut the margin to 13-7 at halftime. The second half was a different story, though, as the Bears' defense limited the Lynx to just 92 yards of total offense. Luke Schumacher scooped up a Rhodes fumble and ran it back eight yards for a TD and a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter. John DeLeon, Cory Snyder, Sean King and Mike Mostardi all added scores for the Bears.

Runners second

The women's cross country team recorded its second-straight second-place finish at the Vanderbilt University Classic Sept. 30. The men's team also stayed consistent, finishing in fourth place for the second straight week. Susan Chou led the women with a 12th-place finish, while Beth Peterson was 15th. On the men's side, Nathan Herschberger was 16th and Pat MacDonald 20th.

Women victorious

The women's soccer team made it four shutouts in a row as the Bears improved to 9-0 on the year and 2-0 in the University Athletic Association with a 3-0 win over Carnegie Mellon University Sunday, Oct. 1. Senior Trisha Young tallied her third-straight game-winning goal in the 28th minute, and Stacy Trent added her second goal in as many days just over three minutes later to make it 2-0 at halftime. Kim Raess closed the scoring in the 86th minute, and Stephanie Peters and Jamie Rosen shared the shutout in goal.

Volleyball wins one

Playing only one match last week, the volleyball Bears made it count with a 14-16, 15-13, 13-15, 15-7, 15-7 win at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Sept. 26. Katie Gielow had 25 kills, Jackie Foley had 12 kills and nine digs, and Julie Suellentrop had 19 digs.

Booters split games

The men's soccer team stretched its winning streak to four games with a 2-0 win at Illinois Wesleyan Sept. 26, only to see it come to a heartbreaking end with a 1-0 double-overtime loss at home to Carnegie Mellon Oct. 1. Nate Anderson broke a scoreless tie against IWU with a goal in the 63rd minute, and James Gilligan added an insurance score 12 minutes later to push the Bears mark to 5-3 on the year. Against Carnegie Mellon, the Bears had several good scoring opportunities but couldn't cash in as the Tartans tickled the twine seven minutes into the second overtime period.
