Joining the University faculty in 1990 as an instructor of medicine, Miller was promoted to assistant professor in 1991 and to associate professor in 1997.
After graduating from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine in 1983, he completed a residency and chief residency in medicine at the University of Colorado. He then trained as a fellow in nephrology at the Washington University School of Medicine.
