Carl Phillips nominated for National Book Award

By Liam Otten

Carl Phillips, associate professor of African and Afro-American studies and director of the Creative Writing Program in Arts and Sciences, has been nominated for the National Book Award in poetry. "Writing poetry is a very quiet, solitary sort of activity," Phillips said when informed of the nomination. "One writes with no expectations beyond the poem itself, and I sometimes forget that the poems are going to go out into the wider world. It's exciting to be reminded that people are actually out there reading them."
