Carl Phillips nominated for National Book AwardBy Liam OttenCarl Phillips, associate professor of African and Afro-American studies and director of the Creative Writing Program in Arts and Sciences, has been nominated for the National Book Award in poetry. Phillips was nominated for his third collection, "From the Devotions," published by Graywolf Press earlier this year. "Writing poetry is a very quiet, solitary sort of activity," Phillips said when informed of the nomination. "One writes with no expectations beyond the poem itself, and I sometimes forget that the poems are going to go out into the wider world. It's exciting to be reminded that people are actually out there reading them." |
