Football Bears rally
Junior Mike Gallo scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes, 44 seconds remaining in the game to cap Washington University's second second-half comeback in as many home games Saturday, Sept. 26, as the Bears rallied for a 27-21 victory over Case Western Reserve University at Francis Field. The Bears (3-1) opened their University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule with a win for the fifth straight year and won for the eighth consecutive time at home after outscoring Case Western 20-7 in the game's final 30 minutes. WU has trailed at halftime in each of the last three games (the Bears have won two of those games) and outscored the opposition 85-20 in the second half this season.
Soccer team wins
The men's soccer team scored only two goals last week, but it was enough for the Bears to secure a pair of non-conference victories at home. The Bears defeated Principia College 1-0 Sept. 23 as senior Dan Gansler headed home the game-winner in the ninth minute. Jim Patterson, another senior, netted the lone goal Sept. 27 in the Bears' 1-0 victory over Marian College (Wis.).
Volleyball team extends streak
The University's top-ranked women's volleyball team ran its conference winning streak to 115 matches by winning the UAA round robin tournament at home last weekend. The Bears dropped just one game in winning all eight matches and now have a 132-1 all-time record in the conference. Senior Jennifer Martz led the way by pounding 93 kills and 31 blocks. She hit .455 for the tournament and was named the UAA Player of the Week. Fellow seniors Jenny Cafazza and Meg Vitter had outstanding tournaments as well. Cafazza hit .451 on the weekend with 53 kills and added 43 digs. Vitter dished out 251 assists and added 35 digs, 15 service aces and 22 kills.
Women's soccer wins two matches
Powered by a high-octane offense and a stingy defense, the University's second-ranked women's soccer team ran its winning streak to six games with a pair of victories last week. Junior forward Rachel Sweeney tied her own school record with four goals and added an assist in an 8-0 win over Carleton College Saturday, Sept. 26. Freshman Jessica Glick tallied her first career two-goal game and senior Lori Thomas and junior Lynn Telken each scored goals. Thomas added a pair of goals and Sweeney her team-leading 14th tally in a 4-1 win over St. Olaf College on Sunday, Sept. 27. Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Peters ran her record to 6-1-0 on the year.
Runners place second
Solid finishes by several individual runners helped the men's and women's cross country teams to a pair of second-place finishes Friday, Sept. 25, at the Brissman-Lundeen Augustana College Cross Country Invitational in Rock Island, Ill. Senior Emily Richard took first in a field of 193 runners, covering the 5,000-meter course in a season-best 18:19. Sophomore Susan Chou was fourth in 18:39 and senior Eileen McAllister was 10th in 19:19. Junior Tim Julien was third in a field of 232 with a season-best 25:42 on the 8,000-meter course.
