Football Bears open 1998 season Sept. 5
Staring at a four-game road losing streak dating back to last season, the football team opens its 108th season Saturday, Sept. 5, at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Bears, enjoying their finest decade in school history with a 52-28 ledger in the 1990s, have won six consecutive decisions over the Engineers since the rivalry resumed in 1992. Washington U. is 8-1 in season-opening contests under Head Coach Larry Kindbom, who is beginning his 10th season on the Hilltop.
Women's soccer team set to host Classic
The women's soccer team opens the 1998 season this weekend as it hosts the Washington University Classic Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5 and 6, at Francis Field. DePauw University will take on Macalester College in Saturday's first game at 11 am. before the Bears meet Gustavus Adolphus at 1:30 p.m. DePauw and Gustavus Adolphus will play Sunday at 11 a.m. followed by Macalester and WU. The game with Macalester will be a rematch of last year's NCAA quarterfinal game, won by the Bears 2-1.
Men's soccer opens
After opening the season Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Maryville University, men's soccer Coach Joe Clarke gets a good chance to see where his squad stands this weekend as the Bears play in the highly competitive Wheaton College Invitational. Besides top-ranked host and defending national champion Wheaton College, the two-day tournament features seventh-ranked California Lutheran University and No. 13 Muhlenberg College. The Bears open the tourney Friday, Sept. 4, vs. Muhlenberg with the consolation and championship games slated for Saturday, Sept. 5.
Volleyball on the road
The women's volleyball team begins its quest to reclaim the national championship this weekend as it begins the 1998 season in Crestview Hills, Ky., at the Thomas More College Invitational. The Bears will take on Franklin College Fri., Sept. 4, at 8:30 a.m. (EDT), followed by a matchup against John Carroll University at 10:30 a.m. Washington will battle host Thomas More Saturday at noon and then play again at either 2 or 4 p.m. against Mt. St. Joseph, Ohio Northern, Wittenberg or Averett. The Bears are looking to win their eighth national championship.
