Carrie Baker Brachmann, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in molecular biology and pharmacology, has received a three-year postdoctoral fellowship from the Cancer Research Fund of the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Foundation. The foundation awarded 14 Runyon-Winchell fellowships to outstanding young scientists conducting research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention. Brachmann, who works in the laboratory of Ross L. Cagan, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular biology and pharmacology, studies factors required for spatial regulation of programmed cell death. ...

Dorsey D. Ellis Jr., J.D., professor of law and former dean of the School of Law, served as commencement speaker for Maryville (Tenn.) College and was presented with an honorary doctor of laws degree. Ellis, who graduated from Maryville in 1960, spoke on "What's 'Liberal' about the Liberal Arts." Ellis recently completed a nine-year term on the college's Board of Directors, including six years as the board's vice chair. ...

Eric S. Meadows, a fourth-year graduate student in the Division of Biology and the Biomedical Sciences Program in Bioorganic Chemistry, has received an American Chemical Society (ACS) fellowship. The Division of Organic Chemistry of the ACS annually awards 19 fellowships to third- and fourth-year U.S. graduate students. Meadows' award, sponsored by Procter and Gamble Co., will support his work in the laboratory of George W. Gokel, Ph.D., professor of molecular biology and pharmacology, during the 1998-99 academic year. The award criteria are research accomplishment, academic record and career potential.

Susan M. Binzer, coordinator and rehabilitative audiologist for the Hearing Rehabilitation and Cochlear Implant Program in the Department of Otolaryngology, and Tom Conran, Ph.D., adjunct professor at Saint Louis University, presented their qualitative research study in progress, titled "The Influence of Personal Beliefs in the Adaptation of Hearing Loss," to the Summer Institute of the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology. Jo Ellen Lewis, J.D., visiting assistant professor of legal writing, served as the opening speaker and moderator for a symposium on "Environmental Concerns in Residential Real Estate," hosted by the Saint Louis University School of Public Health and sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency. Lewis and Ann Davis Shields, J.D., visiting assistant professor of legal writing, presented a talk on the law school's legal analysis and writing program, which emphasizes process-oriented versus product-oriented teaching. ...

Derek P. Morgan, statistical data analyst in the Division of Biostatistics, presented a paper on "A Bag of FSEDIT Tricks" at the annual Statistical Analysis System (SAS)Users Group International Conference in Nashville, Tenn. This group shares ideas on using SAS software to organize and analyze research data. Morgan also has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Midwest SAS Users Group.

The School of Architecture is publishing a new series, "Lectures on Paper," consisting of essays based on lectures delivered at the school. The first was delivered by Jo Noero, the Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture and director of the graduate program in architecture. Noero's lecture was titled "The Ghost of Culture: Reasserting First Principles." Other lectures to be published in the series are by internationally renowned Italian architect and designer Paolo Rizzatto and Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki. Maki recently was selected design architect for the University's proposed Visual Arts and Design Center.
