Women runners are regional champs

The No. 6 women’s cross country team won its first regional championship Nov. 16 as the Bears captured the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship in Peoria, Ill. The women finished atop the 34-team field, while the men finished ninth of 33. With the win, the women qualified for the NCAA Championships Nov. 23 in Northfield, Minn. Senior Brooke Lane led the Bears as she ran her best race of the season to finish 12th in 22:07.46. Junior Emily Lahowetz placed 20th in 22:22.83. Junior Melanie Mikecz finished 21st, while freshmen Andrea Moreland and Catherine Ogorzaly rounded out the scoring for the Bears by placing 29th and 35th respectively. For the men, junior Matt Hoelle qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championships as he placed 11th in 25:01.75. Senior Bryan Tilton was the only other Bears finisher to place in the top 50 as he finished 33rd.

Volleyball advances, to play here again

The No. 2 volleyball team will make its 15th NCAA quarterfinal appearances in the past 16 seasons after rolling past Wartburg College 3-0 in the championship match of the Central Region at the Field House Nov. 16. Junior Katie Quinn nailed 13 kills while junior Amy Brand had 11 and sophomore Ishi Ballew added 10. Senior Rebecca Rotello had 45 assists to move into 22nd on the all-time Division III list with 4,539.

The Bears will host California State University, Hayward, at 2 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Field House, with a berth in the final four at stake.
Other updates

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams recorded two more dual meet wins as both squads defeated Illinois Wesleyan University Nov. 15. The men improved to 3-1 with a 128-88 victory as the team won eight of the 11 events. Diver Ryan Braun collected another NCAA "B" cut in the one-meter diving and also took the three-meter event. The women evened their record at 2-2 with a 123-79 victory. Freshman Tracey Hendrickson added another NCAA "B" cut to her growing list with a win in the 400 individual medley in 4:40.94. It was the first time she swam the event this season. She also won the 200 backstroke. Molly Hornbaker also captured two events, winning the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

The No. 1 men's basketball team kicks off the season by hosting the 19th Annual Lopata Classic today and Nov. 23. Pomona-Pitzer College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology square off in today's first game at 6 p.m., followed by the Bears against Wesleyan (Conn.) University at 8 p.m. The consolation game is 6 p.m. Nov. 23, followed by the championship game at 8 p.m.

The No. 1 women's basketball team will open the season today and Nov. 23 at the Rockford College Tip-Off Tournament in Rockford, Ill. The Bears will take on Wheaton College at 4 p.m. today and will play in either the consolation or championship game Nov. 23 at 2 or 6 p.m.
