Nokia chairman Ollila to speak on managing innovation

Jorma Ollila, chairman and chief executive officer of the Nokia Corp., will present the 2002 Eugene Mackey Lecture for the School of Architecture at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in Steinberg Auditorium.

Jorma Ollila, chairman and chief executive officer of Nokia, will address the relationship between good design and Nokia's worldwide success at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in Steinberg Auditorium. The talk -- called "Managing a Culture of Innovation" -- is the School of Architecture's 2002 Eugene Mackey Lecture and is co-sponsored by the Olin School of Business.
Co-sponsored by the Olin School of Business, the talk is titled "Managing a Culture of Innovation" and will address the relationship between good design and Nokia's worldwide success.

The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in Holmes Lounge in Ridgley Hall.

Born in Seinajoki, Finland, in 1950, Ollila began his career with Citibank N-A in London in 1978 and joined Nokia -- based in Espoo, Finland -- in 1985 as vice president of international operations.

From 1986-89, he served as senior vice president of finance, and in 1990 was named president of Nokia Mobile Phones. In 1992, he was appointed president and CEO of Nokia and was named chairman in 2000.

Ollila holds board memberships with several companies, including the Ford Motor Co., Otava Books and Magazines Group Ltd. and UPM-Kymmene Corp.

A member of the European Round Table of Industrialists, he was awarded Commander, 1st Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 1996; The Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, Officer's Cross, also in 1996; and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1997.

Under Ollila's stewardship, Nokia has emerged as a world leader in mobile communications. The company currently is spearheading the drive to create an open architecture for the next generation of wireless phones, which will boast such capabilities as Internet access and visual content downloading.
