Paradigms of International Justice conference Oct. 11

By Jessica N. Roberts

The Whitney R. Harris Institute for Global Legal Studies will host "Paradigms of International Justice: A Regional Conference of the American Society of International Law" Oct. 11 in the Charles F. Knight Executive Education Center, Room 200.

This conference is the first of three one-day conference workshops on the issue of international justice. The next two will be held at the New England School of Law and at Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

Leila N. Sadat, J.D., professor of law and member of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and Michael Scharf, professor of law at Case Western Reserve, are organizing the conference.

Conference speakers include Harris, a former Nuremberg prosecutor and author of Tyranny on Trial; and M. Cherif Bassiouni, professor of law and president of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University, and chair of the Drafting Committee of the U.N. Diplomatic Conference on the International Criminal Court.

Richard Dicker, director of the International Justice Program for Human Rights Watch, will give the conference's luncheon address.

Law professors from around the United States and various international law experts will participate in two panel discussions: "The Accountability Paradigm: International and Domestic Fora for the Trial of International Crimes" in the morning, and "Challenges to Prosecution: Effectiveness, Legitimacy and Realpolitik" in the afternoon.

Closing remarks will be given by David Scheffer, senior vice president of the United Nations Association of the United States of America and former ambassador-at-large for war crimes. Richard Goldstone, former chief prosecutor for the Yugoslavia and Rwanda tribunals and justice on the South African Constitutional Court will give the keynote address at a banquet in the evening.
