O'Sullivan
new chair of Faculty Senate Council
By Kevin M. Kiley
Its an honor to be in a position to serve the faculty and give something back to the University, said OSullivan, who also is a professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science and an associate professor of radiology in the School of Medicine. The Faculty Senate Council brings together 15 representatives from the Universitys eight schools. The council serves as liaison between the administration and the faculty on a broad range of issues touching virtually all aspects of campus life. The Faculty Senate is comprised of all faculty members. We are concerned in particular with the issues that affect academic freedom and tenure, OSullivan said. We provide feedback to the administration on various matters that affect faculty, such as benefits. As chair of the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate Council, OSullivan represents the faculty on the University Council, the University Management Team and the Sesquicentennial Commission. In addition, OSullivan and the councils secretary, William E. Buhro, Ph.D., professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences, are the two faculty representatives to the Board of Trustees. OSullivan succeeds Philip E. Cryer, M.D., the Irene E. and Michael M. Karl Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the School of Medicine. Cryer had served two years as chair of the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate Council. OSullivan served as council secretary from 1995-98. The director of the Electronic Systems and Signals Research Laboratory, his research interests include information theory; imaging science, including biomedical imaging; object recognition; security technologies; and magnetic information systems. OSullivan earned a bachelors degree in 1982, a masters in 1984 and a doctorate in 1986, all in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. |
