Stevens Point upsets top-ranked women
History repeats; men stunned by late three A last-second three-pointer spelled doom for the top-ranked men's team as DePauw University upset the Bears 90-87 March 8 in the NCAA tournament sectional semifinals. DePauw's Mike Howland hit his fifth three-pointer with two seconds left. Last season, Elmhurst College hit a three-pointer with less than three seconds left to hand WU a 78-77 loss in the tournament's second round. Washington U. led 52-44 at the half, but DePauw used a six-minute, 19-4 run to get back in the game. The Bears regained the lead, 83-82 with just over two minutes left and the game went back and forth the rest of the way. Chris Jeffries led all scorers with 30 points. Other sports news The baseball team (8-2) is off to a hot start as the Bears finished second at the 2002 UAA Tournament, March 8-12 in Sanford, Fla. The Bears opened the tournament with an 8-3 win over perennial national contender Emory University and also knocked off eventual tourney champion Brandeis University, 4-2. Damien Janet was tough on the mound for the Bears, tossing a pair of complete-game wins. The Bears also added wins against Rochester and Case Western Reserve. The softball team (9-5) has a solid start going as the Bears took third at the UAA Tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla. with a 4-4 record after posting a 5-1 mark at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, March 5-7. Washington U. won its first four games of the Rebel Games, including a 4-2 win over two-time NCAA Tournament participant Muhlenberg College. The Bears opened the UAA Tournament with wins over Case Western Reserve, Brandeis and Rochester The women's tennis team started its spring break trip with an 8-1 win over Cal State-Los Angeles and downed the University of the Redlands, 7-2. WU then capped the week with a 5-4 win over No. 9 Kenyon College, the first win over Kenyon in the program's history. Sophomore Laura Greenberg was 7-0 on the week. The 21st-ranked men's tennis squad improved to 4-0 with three wins in Texas. The Bears took a 5-2 win over Southwestern University and a 5-2 victory over No. 6 Trinity University on March 7, They ended the trip with a 7-2 win over St. Mary's University. Senior swimmer Lindsay Wilkinson and junior diver Ryan Braun will represent the University at the 2002 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Oxford, Ohio. Wilkinson will compete March 14-16, while Braun will compete March 21-23. Wilkinson, a nine-time All-American, will be making her third trip to the NCAAs after qualifying in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and the 100 freestyle. Braun will be making his first trip to the NCAAs after placing third at the UAA Championships on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. The women's indoor track and field team tied
for 15th at the NCAA Division III National Championships
March 9. Junior Elizabeth Stoll earned All-America status,
as she was the top finisher for the Bears with a runner-up
finish in the high jump at 5 feet, 7 1/4 inches -- a school-record
and personal best. Also earning All-American status were
junior Kammie Holt (long jump) and sophomore Mindy Kuhl
(1,500). |
